Fri 25th May – Number work – Sorting mixed fractions and decimals into numerical order

LEARNING OBJECTIVE: To be able to compare and eventually sort mixed fractions and decimals into order

SSUCCESS CRITERIA: You will be able to sort a mixed list of decimals and fractions into numerical order.

PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:

  • Convert fractions into decimals and decimals into fractions
  • Be able to simplify fractions and find equivalent fractions

ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY: Sorting Fractions and Decimals

LESSON: Use these mixed lists of numbers to discuss and develop methods for sorting into order

  1. 0.1, 49/50, 1/9
  2. 0.35, 1/3, 10/27
  3. ¾, 0.74, 19,25

Now have a go at sorting these lists of numbers into order, smallest first.

  1. ½, 0.35, 1/3, 2/5, 0.41
  2. 2/3, 3/7, 0.57, 9/16, 0.509
  3. 5/6, 0.87, 7/11, 0.76, 11/12
  4. 5/8, 0.613, 17/32, 31/64, 0.576
  5. 4/5, 17/25, 33/50, 0.476, 0.672
  6. 5/9, 11/18, 0.543, 27/50, 0.53

After Lunch – Problem Solving Activities on wordy number problems.

Give students a problem on each table and they have to solve it between themselves. Use above Notebook file to prepare them for the task.

PLENARY: Discussion around the room about solving their problem (3 in total to solve)
