PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:

  • Convert fractions into decimals and decimals into fractions
  • Be able to simplify fractions and find equivalent fractions

ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY: Sorting Fractions and Decimals

LESSON: Use these mixed lists of numbers to discuss and develop methods for sorting into order

  1. 0.1, 49/50, 1/9
  2. 0.35, 1/3, 10/27
  3. ¾, 0.74, 19,25

Now have a go at sorting these lists of numbers into order, smallest first.

  1. ½, 0.35, 1/3, 2/5, 0.41
  2. 2/3, 3/7, 0.57, 9/16, 0.509
  3. 5/6, 0.87, 7/11, 0.76, 11/12
  4. 5/8, 0.613, 17/32, 31/64, 0.576
  5. 4/5, 17/25, 33/50, 0.476, 0.672
  6. 5/9, 11/18, 0.543, 27/50, 0.53

After Lunch – Problem Solving Activities on wordy number problems.

Give students a problem on each table and they have to solve it between themselves. Use above Notebook file to prepare them for the task.

PLENARY: Discussion around the room about solving their problem (3 in total to solve)

Thurs May 24th – More Probability

LEARNING OBJECTIVE: You will rediscover the language of probability and understand how to write the probability of something happening as a fraction (level 5 work).

SUCCESS CRITERIA: You will be able to understand and use the language of probability and be able to express the probability of something happening as a fraction.

ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY:
Have a go at these Questions

LESSON: Use Checking of Questions to revise probability

Work through Ex 5D page 64 Question 3 Onwards.

PLENARY: Checking Answers to Questions

EXTENSION WORK: Have a look at Extension work on page 65 (need 1 to 10 cards),(higher and lower game we played yesterday).

Work through the whole game a couple of times working out the probabilities each time. Use this table to help record your results:

Card Number

P(Next card Higher)

P(Next Card Lower)

PLENARY: Checking Answers, Confidence feedback

Wed May 23rd – Issue from End of Year test - Revise Probability

LEARNING
OBJECTIVE: You will rediscover the language of probability and understand how to write the probability of something happening as a fraction (level 5 work).

SUCCESS
CRITERIA: You will be able to understand and use the language of probability and be able to express the probability of something happening as a fraction.

ENGAGEMENT
ACTIVITY: Whilst handing out folders – Have this 'Pot of Colours' Starter on the screen (7/8 mins)

LESSSON: Work through this Boardworks Probabilty Presentation.

Working through the presentation using the exercises and discussion with students. Encourage participation on the interactive screens, and get them discussing and feeding back in tables.

Screen 3 – Examples of probability phrases that might be used (2 mins)

Screens 4 to 9 – students write down their answers in their books, before asking someone to explain the correct answer with reasons (5 mins)

Screen 10 – Reveal one statement at a time – give students 1/2 mins to discuss the statement around their tables – ask someone from a table to give their response other comments – repeat with other statements (7/8 mins)

Screen 12 &13 to explain probability scale – discussion - possibly need reminding of fractions – decimals conversions(5 mins)

Screen 14 – use repeatedly getting different students up to IWB to solve the problem ( 6/7 mins)

Screen 16 – Play Higher or lower game with students. They all stand up and then choose Higher or Lower on each card reveal (Highers put their hand up) Losers sit down. Last one standing gets a stamp. (8 mins)

If Time have a go at these Questions

PLENARY: Use some of Screens 17 – 24 to check on understanding of probabilities, feedback from students using five finger feedback for confidence

Weds 16th May/ Thurs 17th May – End of Year test review / Analysis / revision work

LEARNING OBJECTIVE: You will become aware your weaknesses and know what you must revise
SUCCESS CRITERIA: You will be able to list four areas which you will do homeworks on over the next two weeks.
STARTER: Hand all test papers back to students, give them 5 mins to look through their results and talk about with the students around them.
LESSON: Swap Megan and Jack for today and tomorrows lessons only.
You now have 20 / 25 minutes to help each other around your table to get AS MANY QUESTIONS AS possible correct from PAPER 1 ONLY.
  • You are NOT ALLLOWED to ask me for any help during this time
  • YOU MUST help each other.
  • If you can do a question and there are people on your table who cannot do it, it is up to you to teach them how to do it, NOT just give them the answer.
  • If There are any questions on the paper that NOBODY can do let me know the number
Now before we look at some questions together wrote down TWO questions that you know you will need to do some work on before your next test.
Go through any questions that have caused problems across whole group.

If time repeat the exercise for Paper 2.
PLENARY: Students write down at the end pof the lesson the four areas they will need to work on before the next assessment test.
